swimmeet

We were really excited to join the Sportsplex’s Masters swimming program this year. It has helped both of us to set aside time to exercise (one hour, three days a week), allowed us to meet and socialize with other swimmers, provides us with great workouts, and provides a safe environment for constructive feedback on our (mostly Luke’s) strokes. The lifetime fitness benefits alone, which Luke especially has seen noticeable improvement in, make it a worthwhile activity.

Recently, we had the chance to compete in the Sunbelt Masters swim meet in Huntersville. Swimming and competing against other Masters swimmers from around the state was a fun experience. There were swimmers from a wide range of age groups and abilities, but the environment was not intimidating at all despite some of the large teams and fast swimmers participating. Since we were only a few months into Masters swimming, we were very encouraged by the potential that someday our team might be large too. We even brought our two little boys, and they were able to cheer us on from the deck as we swam and help count laps for Cori on her 500 free.

Jerry, the coach, organizes the choose-your-distance (low, med, and high) workouts in a way that ensures that we get to work on all four strokes, speed, endurance, and good technique at a level that is appropriate. We feel that the workouts prepared us really well for the meet. Our endurance has increased tremendously and we are definitely getting faster. At this point, just finishing our races would have been enough, but we were very happy with our times. The meet was a great way to set personal standards that we can look to improve upon as we continue with the program.

Spring-Training

Spring is in the air and nature is revealing it’s vibrant colors and new creations.  Yellow abounds all around us! – in the spring flowers, the pollen on your car and the new weight stack pins on all the Free Motion equipment!  Spring might mean the Easter Bunny to some people, but to us it means the arrival of the quarterly equipment maintenance company!  Many parts that have been on order are now installed including the piston on the ab machine, the motor on the Star Trac treadmill, new foot pedal for the Precor and new handles for all the Free Motions weight equipment.  Now is the time to come celebrate Spring and get back on track with your workouts.  (And admire the new “touch of spring” yellow pins!)

KidsNew Kids Yoga class for SportsPlex members ages 8-12.

Class is Wednesday nights from 6:30-7pm in the Kidsplex room.  Members who want to attend a 6pm class can drop their kids off at Kids Corner and sign them in for the yoga class over there.

 

groupfitnessSpring Fling!   Join us for our annual Group Exercise Demo classes on Saturday, April 30th.

This is a fun day of short 20 min demo classes in place of our regular schedule.  We squeeze a lot of classes and fun into one morning!  Bring a friend and come try a class you haven’t tried before or revisit an old favorite.  Nonmembers can come to the Spring Fling for FREE!  We will have lots of Instructors, lots of classes, fun, food and friends!

couchto5kEver wanted to run a 5K?  Have you started running only to find it boring or too hard? 

Join other members on Tuesday nights at 6pm starting April 5th for our Couch to 5K program.  In 8 weeks you will be ready to run the annual Hillsborough “GOT GRIT” 5k race!  The program is free to members.  Kids are encouraged to join as long as they can keep up with the group and stay focused.   Meet the instructor, Stephanie, at the front desk to start your training!
